在8月8日chinadaily.com.cn上内赫然写着如下文字 :

“当本周以来阳光头一次刺破迷雾时，一百万北京市民纷纷走向公园。而正当庆祝活动进行的时候，天安门广场周围守备森严，在这里，１９８９年的时候，军队镇压了争取民主的示威行动，并造成大量伤亡。”

原文为：More than a million Beijingers made their way to the city's parks as sunshine broke through the smog for the first time this week. Security was tight around Tiananmen Square, where troops crushed pro-democracy demonstrations in 1989 with huge loss of life, as crowds gathered for the celebrations.

在这篇题目为“中国邀请世界参加奥运”(China invites the world to Olympics)的报道中，写稿记者原本想从正面报道奥运一周年倒计时的庆典，可能由于英文水平有限，直接拼凑了多家通讯社的文稿，因为注明来源为 “Agencies”。而该记者又没有仔细审稿，甚至都没有弄清英文原意就直接在网上发表了。

首先发现这一破绽的是法国的一位记者，他在按常例浏览中国日报网页时，不禁“惊讶得跳了起来”，甚至怀疑这是否标志着北京政治立场的转变。可是好景不长，过了没有多久，这一句最敏感的话被删除了，只留下突兀的前半句“当本周以来阳光头一次刺破迷雾时，一百万北京市民纷纷走向公园。”(More than a million Beijingers made their way to the city's parks as sunshine broke through the smog for the first time this week. )

The two post below are so interesting to see. Do these people actually think that most of us do not live in china? We know the situation in china, and much of what the western news prints about this country are in fact true. western reports are not always negative about china, but chinese news is always negative about the west. In fact, much of what the west writes about china is about economics. The most negative articles i have seen were about the tainted products coming from china, which every expat in this country as well as most educated chinese know that many products in china are dangerous. This is not bashing china; it is news worth mentioning considering these products get into the hands of children. Most other news about china is similar to what the chinese media says about itself.

Most of us live in china. And although some of these posters are trying to paint a pretty picture of china for those foreigners who don't live here, most expats who read chinese news, western news, and live in china understand that much of what the west says is not chinese bashing, but in fact the truth. I think the misunderstanding comes from the fact that westerners will read a wide variety of news sources as well as travel, while chinese tend to only read chinese news. What the chinese know about western news is typically what the chinese media writes about western news.

If you, in fact, read both western news and chinese news you would realize that western news writes very little about china. But chinese news is always writing about the west. I already said that western news writes both positive and negative articles about china, most of them the same as what chinese news writes about itself, but chinese news only writes negative articles about the west. Why is this? Because chinese news is still a propaganda tool for the chinese government. Those complaining about western news are so blinded. You should actually read it and compare.

As for me, someone who lives in chinese, reads chinese news, and reads western news, Western news is more accurate. Although they all have their bents, I for one enjoy a positive article here and their as opposed to the chinese view of "china is good and the rest of the world is bad."


I think "hmmm" says it all. "So, basically if there is a western story critical of china, the western media is racist. The western media must therefore be construed as racist towards its own countries as western media freely criticises its own gov'ts."

When will chinese news actually write what is really going on in china instead of covering it up by constantly writing negative articles on the west? I'm waiting for the day when chinese can criticize themselves.
